Do you hate being interrupted?

Yesterday I was walking in downtown Colorado Springs when a young man in his early 20’s took a big step towards me, smiling.

“Excuse me sir!”

I stopped walking and noticed a clip board in his eager hands. Yay….

“Can you take a minute…. I mean…. do you have a minute to answer my questions???”

I have no idea how long he’d been standing there, what he was selling, or how many times he had been rejected that day. It could have been Girl Scout Cookies or petitioning an amendment for the upcoming election.

Regardless, I forced a half-smile and said, “no thanks” and walked off.

If you’re like me and you use Facebook to advertise your business (or your clients’), we are constantly “interrupting the scroll” to get their attention and point their eyeballs towards our offer.

Want to do that more effectively?

Open with a question. Not just any question, though.

Use a question that will cause your ideal prospects to say, “YES!” (For a live example, may I direct your attention to the opening line of this article, and the line above this paragraph).

Imagine this spritely young fellow opening with this, “Excuse me sir. Do you love the taste of a warm cup of coffee on a chilly Fall day?”

Or, “Do you wish you could walk downtown and avoid being accosted by people with clipboards?”

Or, “Wish your kids would do their chores on autopilot and not have to be micromanaged like they’re in prison?”

The answer to those questions, for me, is a resounding “YES”.

Now you have my attention. Now we’re on the same team. We have common ground. We agree on something.

Done well, we transform an abrupt interruption into a conversation.

Try it in your emails, ads, blog posts, social posts, and see how it works for you. Heck, stand on a street corner with a clipboard and see if you can get the attention of passers-by.

Think of what your ideal prospects want, and formulate a question that gets them saying yes!
